Jujutsu, a throwing art developed by Samurai in Japan, was designed to defeat other samurai. Techniques were created to throw armored samurai and take their weapons. Traditional Okinawa Shorin-Ryu karate was created to strike an opponent to knock them out or off balance before throwing, restraining or choking. May of the throwing techniques in Shorin-Ryu karate were taken from Okinawan Toide, an art similar to jujutsu.
